Day 4 in Brazil

Today was an amazing day in Salvador. We started the day with a sail on a boat. It was amazing for me because it was my first time on a boat. Then we went to two islands for  two hours which was an experience I will remember for a lifetime. Me and other students played a game of soccer with a couple of Brazil natives. All in all the day was very fun because we experienced so much on the island and on the boat. It was a day to remember..

Sailing Day!

Today we went sailing and it was wonderful! During the trip we visited two islands. On the first island I bought a drum looking , thing and a bracelet for $20, which was cheap because he into initially wanted $40, but I used the little Spanish I do know to get him to lower the price. Shy, Daria, and I went exploring the island. It was rural but beautiful at the same time. On the second island we ate, and once again the food was delicious. I took a lot of pictures in the water  today while there. When we went back to Bahia, I tried this pizza place by the hotel, and that was good too. I’m coming to the conclusion that Bahia and Brazilian food can do no wrong.

Day 4our

Today was absolutely surreal. The beautiful water. The islands. The people. The boat. The music. The food. The everything. Its so great to be surrounded by such a great group of people especially while in a foreign country. I witnessed Bridget’s first marriage proposal and watched Jeferson talk to a sick crab. I had an awesome time today and all of my selfies were on fleek.

Ciao.

Day 3

Today was exactly what I expected … Extraordinary ! We arose early this morning to load the sail boat . We visited two islands (can’t remember the names) . The first island had the population of only a thousand people. They were very friendly. I purchased a souvenir, coconut water , and a meal . All of which I liked tremendously .. We walked the island and viewed the land ..I saw a few houses , animals and two churches . I assumed all food eaten there must be grown. Later I was informed it was true , but it’s also a boat that brings products to town . I enjoyed the view and seeing the environment they lived in. I wish I could speak their language. 😩

The second island  was beautiful as well . The beach was more of an outdoor restaurant . When we got to the entrance we received complimentary drinks. There was a buffet set out for us to eat .. It was very cozy. Many others went on the tour to go up the stream and view the town , I chose to stay . While on the beach I found many unique shells & also a baby crab. I named him “Larry” , But I released him back to the beach . My last venture was laying in the hammock like seen on movies .. 😍😍😍 its the best feeling. I was sleep before I knew it . Just laying there resting and rocking I didn’t know I dozed off . It was the best feeling ever. Relaxing while listening to the sounds of the ocean , while the Sun’s beaming. Today was a experience I’d only dreamed of . I appreciate being given this opportunity.

Day 2

Today was extraordinary .. We went to an school and learned of its origin.. It was very interesting. The students must have good grades and behavior to participate in the program .. In exchange they learn to read music and learn to play different instruments ..

I really enjoyed the shower tonight and the dinner was great. Each day seems to be getting better and the experience of learning is always at hand .

They stole our science and gave us superstition

This trip is so influential to the discovery of a lost culture our lost culture as African Americans. The play today was better than any broadway play as I looked I saw people that looked like me dancing and I thought about the dance of the modern day culture how its demonized and sexualized. Its irrefutably a spin off the original dance and it had no negative connotations upon its conception but was clearly demonized like many other thing in an effort to obliterate a culture then reclaim it as their’s once they mimic it.

Day 2: Insight and Awareness

It’s easy to think that the hardships we face are only limited to us  individually, or that the same problems don’t exist elsewhere- especially across the globe. The reality is that those thoughts are merely not true. A quote from earlier today says it best, “In Brazil, poverty has color.”

Beginning the day with a trip back to Pelourinhno  was a true treat.  This time, we visited a type of headquarters of Olodum, where we were informed about the background history and it’s significance in the quest for equality for “black” Brazilians during carnival, and their overall social status.  Simply put, racism and classism exists everywhere.  We listened to a discussion about the past and present socio-economic of Afro-Brazilians, and the political influence on those conditions.

A visit to the school heighten my excitement, being an educator. Although it was a performing arts focused school, I was very enthusiastic about seeing children. And, these children are beyond talented. Their eager and amazed faces welcome us to the Olodum School, and we were even allowed to witness them learning percussion in a classroom.   The school serves as a means of promoting cultural enrichment for children from the ages of seven to young adults. The school provides opportunities for student to learn performing arts such as dance, choral and music. They also teach essential skills like technology and leadership. The only requirements are that students maintain good grades and are from low-income families. (Seems like the term “low income” is used worldwide…. Interesting.)

Perhaps the highlight of the day was the African folklore theater show during the evening. Totally amazing! Not enough words to describe it. Basically live singing and dancing with vivid, beautiful costuming that depicted African culture.    Hand drums, African instruments, capoeira, and flirtatious dancers! Best live show of my life….
